How We Began

For a majority of Lutheran immigrants coming from Scandinavia and Germany to the United States, the keeping of their own languages especially for worship and faith instruction was a high priority.  This was true from the 18th century to the early 20th century.  The move toward English was gradual but accelerated largely during and after World War I.  This move also happened in the Eugene area at this time.  There were Lutherans in both Norwegian and Danish area congregations who wanted to make this change.  At the same time, there were more who wanted to keep the original languages even if English was used in worship occasionally.  As a result, members from Trinity Lutheran (now Central Lutheran) and Emmaus Lutheran as well as other Lutherans in the area who wanted to use English exclusively began to meet.  After a number of conversations, those who wanted to use English and were known by at least one church as “diehard progressives” voted to form United Lutheran Church in 1926.  The congregation joined the United Lutheran Church in America.  Since its foundation, United has had a focus on addressing the needs of the community and proclaiming the Gospel.  United’s commitment to youth, education, community, and social justice mark its ministry.  By way of example, United was the first Lutheran congregation in the area to become a Reconciling in Christ congregation by which members of the LBGTQIA+ community have been gladly welcomed.  The congregation also works with people of other faiths to see what God has in store for our community.

100th Anniversary Capital Projects

The Church Council has identified capital projects that will upgrade our building for our 100th Anniversary Celebration and beyond. Click for details about each project. Scroll down to make your gift.

As we will be holding more events in our fellowship hall, we are needing to add speakers, a projector, a new hung screen, microphones, amplifier, etc. It has been clear that we could use a more stable system that will allow us to hear and see better. While this seems expensive, prices are only going up. We have received a bid from Smeed and checked it with Pro Sound and Video. Give to hear and see better in our fellowship hall.

This project will replace the stairs and railings that lead up to our kitchen to make them secure and more maintenance free. Steel will be used for the railings and likely cement for the stairs themselves. We will be looking to combine this with replacing the old pilings that are rotting away. Give that we may enter and exit safely from the kitchen.

If you walk down the stairs from the kitchen, you will notice that some of the railway ties are beginning to rot away. It may most sense to do this work in conjunction with the stairs. We are having a bid updated.

As we welcome folks back for our 100th anniversary, we want to spruce up our entry way. The council has already ok’s having the window on each side of the entry way replaced. In addition Dan is looking to have the area sanded, stained, and repaired as necessary. Give to make a good first impression.

This is an expensive project. We are currently looking into less expensive options. Our desire is to become more ADA friendly at least on our main level. We are looking into possible grants to help us with this cost. Give a donation to help the most vulnerable enter and exit more easily.

Give one-time or make your gift in installments. Designate a particular project in the 'Memo' section or let the Council decide what is needed most.
