What we believe

United is part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). The mission of the ELCA is:

Marked with the cross of Christ forever, we are claimed, gathered and sent for the sake of the world.  As members of the ELCA, we believe that we are freed in Christ to serve and love our neighbor. With our hands, we do God’s work of restoring and reconciling communities in Jesus’ name throughout the world.”  It is truly "God's Work, Our Hands."

Lutheran Christians believe that the story of God's steadfast love and mercy in Jesus is the heart and center of what the Scriptures have to say. Lutherans, along with many other Christians, use the three ecumenical creeds --- the Apostles' Creed, the Nicene Creed, and the Athanasian Creed --- in worship. Lutherans affirm the seven writings composed by Luther and others in the Book of Concord and use them in teaching.

We affirm that Christ has made us one body with many members, all sharing in God’s wondrous grace and unconditional love. We celebrate both the human variation and inclusive unity of God’s family. Following Jesus’ example, we embrace all of God’s people, celebrating uniqueness of age, race, ethnicity, physical or mental abilities, marital status, all sexual orientations, gender identities, gender expressions, theological perspectives, and economic circumstance. We commit ourselves to the work of anti-racism and creating an anti-racist space through the protection against oppression internally, in institutions, interpersonally and structurally.  With welcoming hearts, we invite all to join us in worship, fellowship, and ministry.
